For pancreatic metastases located at the back of pancreas in its tail or in the middle, consider consulting Dr.Walz from Essen, Germany re. less invasive (low traumatic) surgical option. He has very rare extensive experience of performing laparoscopic surgeries trough the 3 small incisions at the back of the patient. It would be safe to say that he has the biggest experience in the world in using this approach. It mostly used for the adrenal preserving surgeries to remove the primary tumors and metastases from the adrenal glands, but also for the organs easily accessible from this entry point - kidneys and back side of pancreas. This approach is not commonly used, but as the time goes more surgeons are get trained by Dr.Walz, so you might find this type of surgery available locally. But if the money are not an issue, always try to get the surgery from the most experienced surgeon in the field and as of now, Dr.Martin is far ahead of the rest. As of now (Aug.2016) the cost of the pancreatic surgery is about 25,000 Euro including 1 week of the accommodation with food for the companion (the surgery incl. up to 30 days stay at the hospital in case of the complications). The advantages of the experience are the quality of the surgery - more chance of the tumor being resected with the negative margins even in the very complex locations, with preservation of the spleen and main blood vessels, less chance of the post-surgical complications, infections and nerves damages. Also the very distinct advantage of the experienced laparoscopic surgeon is the less risk that the very attempt of the VATS surgery is successful and it does not need to be converted into the open surgery midway into the surgical time. When it happens, the epidural anesthesia is installed after the surgery, it works not that good then. Dr.Walz is very well prepared to deal with all the complex situations and dangerous moments that happen during the surgery laparascopically.
