The above procedure is a break through as patients are being put through mega doses of steroids and other possible treatments to reduce the edema induced tumor progression OR radiation induced necrosis

Apparently a biopsy can determine a necrosis however it is only part of the big pictiure. There still could be live tumor progression.
An MRI tells only part of the story as well.

Very interesting read and both articles come with the free full text. Brittany had it few years ago as a part of the clinical trial for this new technology in Boston, for the suspected recurrence - the biopsy was done during the procedure trough the same probe that was later used for the ablation procedure, and it was found that there is no recurrence but post irradiation necrosis. This ablation procedure was positioned as a brain mets treatment procedure, but now it seems that it is looked at as a fix treatment for the brain mets that are radio graphically progressing but it is unclear what the picture shows - the radiation necrosis or a true progression - but both of them need to be fixed. It is good to see that now neurosurgeons get more technologically advanced tools to help them to treat hard to reach locations in the brain. When we met with Ivan's neurosurgeon 1.5 years ago (June 2013) he already had this on offer - we were offered the choice of an open surgery, radiosurgery and laser ablation (LITT). We choose the open surgery as this met was in a very accessible location right under the skull bone, but in other cases LITT could be a very good choice.
