Ashley Charron from South Dakota - Dx 2003 - RIP 23/10/2007

Ashley is currently on Nexavar & Avastin. The nexavar is taken every day in pill form. The Avastin is given every other week by IV.
Side effects have been foot sores, mouth sores, weight loss, tired a lot of the time, and she did lose her hair.
The foot sores are gone, just had them when she first started the nexavar, her hair is starting to grow back, and she is really trying hard to put some weight back on.
Her scans continue to show improvement, primary in the pelvic is over 90% dead, lung mets seem to be up & down on each scan, sometimes better and then the next just stable or a little worse. We scan again soon so we are anxious to see how things are going.
We still continue to follow any new drugs that come out and make sure that we keep in contact with the pathologist that did her molecular studies on her primary tumor and her lung mets, he is very good at checking out all new drugs we hear about.
Ashley is now a junior in college, attends full time and is enjoying her classes. It has been 4 years since she was diagnosed and she has been thru many different treatments. We believe that this combo has been the most effective so far. We wil make sure and update this website when her scans are over.

Dear Bonnie,
Thank you for sharing the important update information about dear Ashley's current situation. It is very encouraging that her primary tumor has shown so much shrinkage and that her scans continue to show improvement. You said that her lung mets are up and down being sometimes better and sometimes stable or a little worse. Does this mean that the mets are sometimes decreasing and sometimes decreasing in size or number, or both? Do her routine scans include a brain MRI, an abdominal CT, and bone scans along with the chest and pelvic scans? I am so grateful that she has been able to continue to attend her college classes, despite the negative side effects of her treatments. She is truly an inspiration. We will be anxiously awaitng the results of her next scans and we will be holding tight to Hope that her primary tumor continues to show shrinkage along with her lung mets, and that there is no further disease progression. Prayerfully, the Nexavar/Avastin treatment will prove to be the miracle treatment and cure which we are all so desperately seeking. Please give dear Ashley a special hug and our best wishes.

Ashley began this treatment early October 2006. She has regular scans about every 2 months. These include CT, Mri, PEt scans. Yes, we do Mri of brain. Bone scan has not been done for awhile so I will ask her doctor to include in the next set of scans scheduled for early March.

Dear Bonnie,
I am glad to read your reports. The improvement in Ashley's condition is another example how important is it to be active, to take the initiative and try new type of therapies.
I have two questions to you: 1. How do the doctors determine 90% death of the primary? Was biopsy ever taken?
2. Did Ashley's oncologist ever considered Sutent in addition to Avastin and Nexavar?

Radiologist that reads the scans is the one that tells us that there is the 90% death of tumor. We try to have comparisons done from earlier scans each time.

Doctor that did molecular study of Ashleys tumors does not feel that Sutent would be to any advantage to her.

Ashley Charron 21 of Webster passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Christ The King Catholic Church in Webster. Celebrating the Mass will be Bishop Joseph Charron, Monsignor James Andraschko and Fr. David Axtmann. Burial will be in St. Otto’s Cemetery, Webster.

Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Friday 2-4 P.M. then continuing at the church until 8:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. Rosary and scriptural wake service.

The Ashley Charron Memorial Fund has been established at Dakotah Bank, P.O. Box 596, Webster, SD 57274.

Ashley Maurine Charron was born on Sunday, May 18, 1986 to David and Bonnie (Boyer) Charron at Gettysburg, South Dakota. She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Seneca. In 1989 the family moved to Webster where she began elementary school and then graduated from Webster High School in 2004. At the present time she was a student at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota where she was majoring in Elementary Education. Her dream was to become a 3rd grade teacher.

While in high school she was active in Volleyball, Girl’s Basketball, Track and many other school activities. In her senior year, while she was battling cancer, she was chosen as a member of the South Dakota All State Volleyball Team.

Ashley had many great loves in her life, her family, friends and spending time at the family lake home on Enemy Swim Lake. She loved all water activities including, pontooning, riding seadoo, wake boarding, tubing and boating. And her dog, K.C. was always a constant companion.

Ash fought a courageous battle against her cancer diagnosis for almost five years. Her love of life and bright smile was and will always be remembered as an inspiration to anyone who ever met her.

Ashley passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at her home on Enemy Swim Lake at the age of 21 years, 5 months and 5 days.

Survivors include her parents, David and Bonnie Charron of Webster; a sister, Jessica Charron of Webster,SD; her paternal grandparents, Jack and Maurine Charron of Sturgis, SD; her maternal grandparents, Dick and Barb Boyer of Webster, SD; her loving boyfriend, Brent Fosheim of Webster, SD; and several uncles, aunts and many cousins.

Thank you for so graciously finding the strength in the midst of your time of such devastating loss and profound grief to share the heartbreaking news of your beloved Ashley's tragic loss with this Forum. As I told you previously in my personal message to you, although we have never personally met each other we have come to feel like your precious Ashley and all of your dear family are a part of our family as we have all shared this very difficult journey together. Throughout her increasingly challenging almost five year battle with this cruel cancer dear Ashley has inspired us with her incredible courage, her invincible positive attitude, and her undeterred determination and perseverance despite all that she suffered and endured. She was blessed to have such a dedicated and loving family, and certainly she was strengthened and sustained by your abundant love and devotion.
