First CAR-T therapy success in solid tumors in mice

Post by Ivan »

In CAR-T therapy, T cells are removed from a patient and modified so that they express receptors specific to the patient's particular cancer. The T cells, which can then recognize and kill the cancer cells, are reintroduced into the patient.

Yesterday, the first successful treatment of a solid tumor via this method (in this case, it was prostate cancer) was reported - Poseida Therapeutics Presents Preclinical Solid Tumor Data for P-PSMA-101 at the American Association for Cancer Research Prostate Cancer Meeting

http://poseida.com/wp-content/uploads/2 ... BS-002.pdf

This is only two steps away from an ASPS cure.

1) The above needs to be done for humans instead of mice.
2) The T-Cells need to be modified to target the known ASPS mutations instead of the above.

When it's available, it will likely cost between $100K-$1M. CAR-T therapies that are currently available are around $500K USD - http://www.onclive.com/web-exclusives/n ... ll-therapy

Actually, there's more stuff with CAR-T relevant to ASPS that's going on right now. ASPS tumors express MET, and there's a clinical trial right now which is testing just that in humans with breast cancer - https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03060356

Here are preliminary results of from the same team of a Phase 0 experiment in humans - http://cancerimmunolres.aacrjournals.or ... 9.full.pdf

Basically they injected the CAR-T cells into tumors directly and that worked as expected.

Seems like we're close to having targeted ASPS therapies.

Here's a good overview of the current state of CAR-T therapy in solid tumors (attached full article).

Chimeric antigen receptor-T cell therapy for solid tumors require new clinical regimens - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29048935

A couple more years at least, it seems

Ivan,

This is indeed good news as FDA has already approved CAR-T for * blood cancers and has moved onto solid tumor research.

Furthermore, they are already well on their way to making it work in human prostate cancer -

Solid tumors is a major milestone. Yes, it's effective in leukemia but that isn't of much help to us.
